Linguistics in healthcare play an important role between the relationship of the provider and patient. In many settings, language barriers can prevent effective communication between healthcare providers and a better understanding of the nuances of language and how to communicate effectively with patients who speak different languages or have different cultural backgrounds is paramount to providing effective care.

For dental patients in low income communities, where patients may have limited access to healthcare resources and various language barriers, this effective communication can improve patient outcomes by ensuring that patients understand their diagnosis, treatment options, and any necessary follow-up care.

Patients in low-income areas may come from diverse cultural backgrounds, and dental professionals need to be sensitive to cultural norms and values when communicating with them. Focusing on linguistics can help dental professionals tailor their communication style to the specific needs and preferences of their patients, leading to more empathetic communication and improved patient outcomes. Dental professionals who do not speak their language may have difficulty communicating the importance of brushing, flossing, and regular dental check-ups. When linguistic barriers prevent effective communication with dental professionals, these risks may be further compounded.

Patients in low-income areas may have also had negative experiences with healthcare providers in the past, leading to mistrust and low patient satisfaction. By refocusing and improving communication with patients, dental professionals can improve patient satisfaction and build trust with their patients. In many communities that are below the average income level, patients may not have insurance or may have limited resources to pay for dental care. Effective communication can help dental professionals provide cost-effective care by ensuring that patients understand the importance of preventative care and are empowered to take an active role in their oral health.

By understanding the importance that linguistics can play in dental and oral healthcare, dental patients can get the most out of their treatment while building a relationship with their medical provider. As providers begin to understand a patient's need and background, they can better tailor the treatment to come up with the best plan of action to fit the patient’s lifestyle and concerns.
